  111.                      A 555 Timer Designer and

  114. EZ555 is an easy to use tool for designing astable oscillators. This
  115. program should be useful for educational purposes and prototype
  116. development.  The results produced by this program should never be
  117. directly used in a design without extensive prototype testing. EZ555
  118. will allow users to work with impractical designs. Power dissipation
  119. problems are not detected by EZ555.
  120.  
  121. EZ555 allows users to use a "cut and try" design method. An engineer
  122. can try a wide range of possibilities in a very short time  using
  123. EZ555. The program can also be very useful for instruction and learning.
  124. A professor can present a wide range of possibilities to students using
  125. overhead projected video.

  127. EZ555 is the first of a planned series of engineering programs designed
  128. to be very friendly on narrow technical topics. This is in contrast to
  129. most engineering programs which are complex to operate but cover many
  130. topics.
  131.  
  132. EZ555 allows users to change the timing resistors, timing capacitor,
  133. frequency, and duty cycle. The user can change one or several parameters
  134. prior to selecting the recalculate button. Generally, better results are
  135. obtained by changing only one parameter at a time. EZ555 makes
  136. calculations based on the parameter changed by the user. The list below
  137. describes the procedures used by EZ555.
  138.  
  139. (1) Frequency, duty cycle, on time, and off time are recalculated
  140. when the user changes any combination of R(1), R(2), and C.
  141.  
  142. (2)  R(1) and R(2) are recalculated when the user makes a change
  143. to duty cycle.
  144.  
  145. (3) C is recalculated when the user makes a change to frequency.
  146.  
  147. Items can be selected by clicking the mouse on the item or by using the
  148. cursor keys and ENTER to make selections. Once a selection is made,
  149. pressing the INS key allows characters to be inserted. Pressing the
  150. INS key again will return the keyboard to the type-over mode. The
  151. DEL key causes the character at the current position to be deleted while
  152. BACKSPACE deletes the character to the left of the cursor position.
  153. Other aspects of the full-screen editing ability of EZ555 are identical
  154. to most editors and word processors. EZ555 ignores all characters after
  155. the first non-numeric character in a field.

  159. EZ555 uses a dark on light video presentation on your monitor screen.
  160. This is the opposite of the display method used by DOS. If you plan to
  161. do screen printing, give the command below in response to the DOS
  162. prompt prior to starting the EZ555 program.

  166. This will reverse the graphics printout to agree with the EZ555 images.
  167. EZ555 images can be printed by pressing either SHIFT/PRINTSCREEN or
  168. PRINT SCREEN depending on the keyboard type.

  303. Type 555 at the DOS prompt to start the program. The installation
  304. program INSTALL.EXE can be used to install EZ555 from a floppy disk to
  305. your hard drive. The screen driver program VGA.COM must be present in
  306. the same directory as 555.EXE. You must have VGA graphics to use EZ555.

  308. The installation program, INSTALL.EXE, may not be included with all
  309. distributions of this program. Copies of EZ555 downloaded from BBS and
  310. on-line services do not require installation from floppy disks. Do not
  311. run INSTALL if EZ555 is already in a directory on your hard drive.
